Northamptonshire's miserable fortunes in the Championship this season continued yesterday at Basingstoke when they suffered an innings defeat against Hampshire. The one-day specialists have yet to win in the four-day game this year.

Hampshire's captain, John Stephenson. took his season's best figures of 5 for 27 as the visitors were bowled out for 147 in their first innings. Stephenson then took two more wickets as Northamptonshire fell to an innings and 72-run defeat.

At Bath, Shane Lee smashed a career-best 167 not out to put Worcestershire in trouble and wicketkeeper Rob Turner also scored an unbeaten century as the pair broke a 98-year-old Somerset record with their sixth-wicket stand of 278.

From 98 for 6, the home side were able to declare on 376 for 6, setting Worcestershire 446 to win. By the close they had reached 44 for 0.

Nottinghamshire's Chris Cairns raised his side's hopes of ending a barren spell without a championship victory against Gloucestershire at Trent Bridge.

The New Zealand all-rounder completed his first century of the season and then made the initial inroads into Gloucestershire's batting as they slumped to 190 all out.

Andrew Harris's career-best six-wicket haul put Derbyshire in command against Middlesex at Derby. The pace bowler took 6 for 43 as Middlesex were dismissed for 165 to give Derbyshire a first-innings lead of 156.

At Hove Jason Lewry took 6 for 44 as Sussex bowled Glamorgan out for 133 - their lowest first-innings score of the season - in 43.3 overs. In reply captain Alan Wells hit 78 as Sussex reached 162 for 5.
