St Helens, 58-20 winners against First Division Rochdale yesterday, emerge from the weekend's Silk Cut Challenge Cup as the new favourites following Wigan's demise at the hands of Salford.
Although Rochdale trailed only 22-20 at one stage, they were killed off by three tries in five minutes midway through the second half. The wingers Anthony Sullivan and Danny Arnold scored hat-tricks, while Paul Newlove touched down twice.
Also victorious were Bradford, who won 44-12 at Leigh, and Halifax, who won 18-6 in a delayed fourth-round tie at Whitehaven and now take on Sheffield for a place in the last eight, and Leeds, 30-10 winners over Warrington on Saturday.
Salford will be one of five First Division teams going into the hat for tomorrow's quarter-final draw. The others are Wakefield, who beat amateurs West Hull on Friday, Hull, who knocked out Keighley, as well as Widnes, and Dewsbury, who have still to play their fifth-round tie.
