Ronnie O'Sullivan's swift elevation from 57th to ninth in the provisional rankings for the 1994/95 season has made him the second favourite behind Stephen Hendry, the world champion and world No 1, to win the Regal Welsh tournament, which starts on Sunday in Newport. O'Sullivan, winner of the UK Championship and runner-up in the European Open, plays Paul McPhillips in the opening session on Sunday afternoon. Hendry's first match is on Monday evening against Tony Drago. Ken Doherty, the Dubliner who beat the Scot Alan McManus to win the Regal Welsh last year, opens against Jonathan Birch on Sunday afternoon. The winner next Saturday will receive pounds 27,000.
