Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

The Calor Gas British Horse Trials Championships, starting today at Gatcombe Park, are enjoying their best entry. Pippa Nolan defends her open title after being runner- up in 1990 and 1991 to Mary Thomson, who lost her chance of winning three in a row last year on the cross- country section. This year, spectators have an added attraction. The British Intermediate Championship is being contested alongside the open event, which means there will be cross country on Sunday. Dressage starts today at 9am, continuing at 8.30am tomorrow, with cross country from noon tomorrow and 10am on Sunday. Show jumping begins at 8.30am tomorrow and 10am on Sunday.

How to get there: Gatcombe Park is on the Avening to Minchinhampton road, five miles south-east of Stroud, Gloucestershire, from A419 and is signposted from junction 15, M4, junction 13, M5, and at Stroud, Cirencester and Tetbury. Admission: Today: pounds 5 per car (up to six occupants). Tomorrow: pounds 15. Sunday: pounds 15. Three-day ticket pounds 25.
