SPORTING Q&A
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

In the recent England v France international at Wembley, seven Arsenal players took the field during the match: Seaman, Dixon, Adams and Keown for England; Anelka, Petit and Vieira (as a substitute) for France. Nigel Winterburn was also one of the England substitutes not used. Has there ever been a senior international where more than eight players from a single club were involved?
A. In 1932 Arsenal provided seven of the England team which beat Italy 3-2. Queens Park provided all 11 players when Scotland played England in 1872. This achievement was matched by Corinthians in 1894, when the club supplied the entire England side for an international against Wales at Wrexham, which they won 5-1. The following year they did the same when England drew 1-1 with Wales at Queen's Club.

Q. Huddersfield Town supplied five players for the England v Scotland match on 31 March 1928 at Wembley. (Alec Jackson for Scotland, and Goodall, Wilson, Kelly and Smith for England). In those pre-substitute days it represented 23 per cent of all participants for the whole 90 minutes (which compares favourably with Arsenal's eight from 32, as many of those eight did not play for the entire match).

Q. On 10 January in a rugby union game in the Devon and Cornwall League, Bude and Teignmouth drew 0-0. What is the most significant game of rugby to have ended 0-0? Was it exciting?
A. In the 1988 Rugby League Challenge Cup, Halifax and Hull drew 0-0 in their semi-final at Headingley. They went on to a replay again in Leeds - this time at Elland Road. The score in the replay was 4-3 to Halifax.

Q. I recently found part of a Daily Express racing section dated 19 October 1934, which had been concealed in the structure of my house when it was built. I can read part of a page which has tips on it for some of the races at Catterick and Newmarket that day (two or three tips per race). The tips are: Newmarket 1.45 (5 furlongs) - Starswift, Parma. 2.15 (1 mile) Tabasco IV, Archman, Paper Cap. Catterick 2.15 (7 furlongs) - Argyll, Peony Hill. 2.45 (1m 3f) - Bull Point, Daysight. Does anyone know how any or all of those horses fared that day? How good were they generally? Do they have any living descendants still racing?

Q. Much is made of Neil Back's lack of height among the giants of the England back row. Is he the shortest to play for England in that position?
