Dominik Hasek, the Buffalo Sabres goaltender and five-time winner of the best NHL goaltender award, is to retire at the end of next season. The 34-year-old gold medal winner at the 1998 Olympics, said that he had grown tired of the attention and popularity he received and wanted to return to his native Czech Republic.

Nottingham Panthers continued their team re-building plans with the signing of the Canadian winger Aaron Cain yesterday. Cain played for Johnstown Chiefs in the East Coast League last season.
