Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Everton have appointed Sir Philip Carter as deputy chairman of the club. Carter joined the board in 1975 and was previously chairman from 1978 to 1991. He was president of the Football League from 1986 to 1988 and played a leading role in the formation of the FA Premiership.

The Hungarian government agreed yesterday to take part in a joint bid with Austria to host the 2004 European Championship.

The former Aston Villa striker Savo Milosevic scored with a well-placed chip to give Yugoslavia the lead in their 1-1 draw with Brazil in Wednesday's friendly in Sao Luis. Marcelino Carioca curled in a free-kick to equalise for Brazil.

A resurgent Milan retained their lead at the top of the European club rankings this week after preserving their 100 per cent record in the Italian league with a 2-1 win away to promoted Salernitana. But Bayern Munich, another club with great traditions who are back to their best form after a spell in the doldrums, are close behind after a fifth successive win in the Bundesliga.
