FABIO BALDATO beat his fellow Italian Maurizio Fondriest by a tyre-width in a 20-man sprint to capture the 16th stage of the Tour of Italy from Lumezzane to Borgo Val Di Taro. It was Baldato's second stage victory in this year's race. Miguel Indurain of Spain, who crossed the finish line in the same time as the winner, retained the overall leader's pink jersey with five stages to come.
