New Zealand, having won the toss, reached 196 for 8 in 45 overs after rain cut the game from the scheduled 50 overs, Australia were 51 for two after 13.3 overs. The Australian bowler Paul Reiffel took four wickets in nine balls to finish with 4 for 38 in his 10 overs.
