Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire's former England opener, has announced his retirement from the first-class game because of recurring injury problems after 17 seasons with the county. Moxon, 37, has decided to quit on medical advice after an operation on his back following degenerative disc problems. He will stay on at Yorkshire as director of coaching.

Sky Sports and the BBC will share coverage of the 1999 World Cup in an pounds 8m television agreement announced yesterday. Both broadcasters will show the World Cup final on 20 June and are dividing up the other 41 matches in the tournament, which is being staged in England. There will be live coverage, too, of all matches on BBC radio.

Mike Smith, Gloucestershire's former England bowler, has agreed a new three-year contract with the county which will come into effect when his present deal runs out at the end of next season.
