ALAN SHEARER underlined his power and ability, scoring both of Blackburn Rovers' goals against Manchester United and reducing United's lead in the League to three points as both teams vie for the FA Carling Premiership title.

Terry Venables' plans for England suffered a double blow. A friendly against Germany on the anniversary of Adolf Hitler's birthday was called off and Paul Gascoigne broke his leg in training with Lazio.

In the run-up to the US Masters, Mac O'Grady, Seve Ballesteros's new coach, called for the introduction of random urine tests after claiming that at least seven of the world's leading golfers use beta-blockers, which, while not illegal, gives them an unfair advantage.

Ronnie O'Sullivan beat James Wattana 9-4 to win the British Open in Plymouth. He was then quoted at 6-1 to become the youngest World Championship winner in Sheffield in May.
