Sport Politics: Attack on 'arrogance' of whites
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.BLACK opinion is divided about the future of South African rugby after the provocative singing of the South African national anthem 'Die Stem' by white supporters before last Saturday's Test against New Zealand in Johannesburg.
Saturday's Test in Cape Town against Australia will take place, following discussions between the African National Congress and the rugby unions, although Steve Tshwete, the ANC sports spokesman, argued for calling it off. 'The white community is not prepared to accept the hand of reconciliation,' he said. 'Rugby fans deserve to be punished.'
Ngconde Balfour, general manager of the South African union's development programme in the townships, said: 'The arrogance of white South Africans is too much to bear sometimes. I feel like resigning but have decided we must continue doing what we're doing so that black kids get the chance to play for South Africa. We ourselves didn't have that chance because there were laws that stopped us.'
