PETER THOMSON, the Australian who won the second of his five Open championships at St Andrews, has been awarded the contract to design the Scottish town's first new course since 1913.

TOM KITE scored five birdies in his final seven holes to win the rain-shortened Los Angeles Open and become the first player to pass dollars 8m ( pounds 5.75m) in USPGA Tour earnings. The 43-year-old US Open champion collected dollars 180,000 ( pounds 130,000) for the 19th Tour victory of his career.
