CHRIS BOARDMAN, the Olympic pursuit champion, used the revolutionary Lotus machine he rode at Barcelona to break the world five-kilometre amateur outdoor cycling record in the National Track Championships at Leicester yesterday. Boardman who gained Britain's first Olympic cycling gold medal for 72 years in Barcelona, clocked 5min 38.083sec. His time broke the previous record of 5:46.025, set at altitude by the American, Kent Bostick, in October 1991, and also bettered the professional mark of 5:44.700, also set at altitude by Germany's Gregor Braun in 1986.
