From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Darren Morgan, a quarter-finalist at the World Championship, was struck by a second tragedy in six months yesterday when his 62-year-old father, Morgan, died suddenly at his home in Cwmfelinfach, Gwent, yesterday. The cause of death is not known, writes Guy Hodgson.

Morgan, the world No 9, broke down in tears at the Crucible after his second-round win over Ronnie O'Sullivan as he remembered his mother, Cynthia, who died in November after a long battle against cancer. "I realise no amount of moaning will bring her back," he said. "But if she is looking down on me I hope she is smiling.''

Morgan is a stablemate of Stephen Hendry and Ken Doherty, who are contesting the final in Sheffield.

His manager, Ian Doyle, said: "It has been a traumatic season for Darren and this is a desperate way to end it. Everyone at Team G de Z is thinking of him at this time.''
