There were mixed fortunes for English clubs in the European Cup-Winners' Cup competition yesterday when Slough women reached today's final in the Netherlands but Teddington, competing in Italy, had to settle for a chance of winning a bronze medal in Sardinia.
Teddington's dream of a gold was ended when they were beaten 3-0 by HDM, the Dutch side from the Hague. They now face Polo Barcelona.
The Teddington coach, Jon Royce, conceded that the Dutch were technically superior and that his side had been forced into too many errors. The Dutch now play Harvestehuder from Hamburg, whom Teddington beat for the bronze in last year's competition, in today's final.
Mandy Nicholls, who scored seven times in Slough's 13-0 win against Heriot Watt University on Saturday, was again on target yesterday against the Russiam club, Tekstilshik, in their 3-2 victory.
Leading 2-0 at half-time, Slough relaxed to let the Russians back into the game when Michelle Hall conceded a penalty stroke. Sam Wright scored Slough's third goal and the Buckinghamshire club now meet the Frankfurt side, Rsselsheim, in the final in a repeat of February's European indoor final, which the Germans won.
