From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Kaelin takes final giant slalom

Urs Kaelin of Switzerland won the World Cup season's last giant slalom yesterday, while the world champion, Alberto Tomba of Italy, managed only fourth place after mistakes in both runs. Overall World Cup champion Katja Seizinger won the women's race, and her German team-mate Martina Ertl captured the giant slalom World Cup title by finishing second. Kaelin led by nearly a second after the first run and cruised home to his second victory of the season with an aggregate time of 2 min 12.44 sec. "I just attacked enough. There were two or three holes in the course in the second run," Kaelin said. Tomba, in his first race since winning the slalom and giant slalom gold medals at last month's World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain, trailed Kaelin by .91 seconds after the first run. Although known for spectacular comebacks, Tomba, the three-times Olympic champion, had an unsteady afternoon run down the bumpy course and dropped from second to fourth in the end.
