Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Peter Marshall's attempted comeback to the world scene came to an abrupt halt when he was beaten in straight games in the opening round pf the PSA tournament in Yokohama by his fellow Briton, Mark Chaloner.

The former world No 2, who has been absent from the circuit since losing the British Open final to the world champion, Jansher Khan, suffered a shocking 8-15, 6-15, 5-15 defeat.

Marshall resumed training last month, but pulled out of the Malaysian Open and Hong Kong Open in the past two weeks, failing to shake off the effects of a liver complaint.

There were no other upsets, however, with Cassie Jackman, Suzanne Horner, Simon Parke and Peter Nicol advancing to the second round.

Sarah Fitzgerald, the world No 2, cleared the first hurdle towards a showdown against fellow Australian and reigning champion, Michelle Martin, making quick work of Tracy Shenton, of England, 9-0, 9-3, 9-0.

The top men's and women's seeds had a rest day yesterday after Jansher Khan had beaten his fellow Pakistani, Zubair Jahan Khan 15-5, 11-15, 15- 2, 15-11, and Martin beat Jade Wilson of New Zealand 9-7, 10-8, 9-2 on Tuesday.
