Sailing: Endeavour beats Smith by minutes
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Dalton's Maxi, New Zealand Endeavour, moved into the overall lead, while Smith's Intrum Justitia, 5min 39sec behind, moved from fifth place to second in the Whitbread 60 class.
Endeavour now has an overall lead of 1hr 56min over Tokio, though Chris Dickson's boat stays ahead of Intrum Justitia in the W60s.
Victory came after two days of close-quarter battling, but Smith complained afterwards that Dalton and the maxis were no more than a nuisance. 'Grant is cruising round on his own,' he said. 'If we had been match racing they would not have been ahead of us.'
Afterwards, Dickson was taken to hospital after falling outside a bar, gashing his head and blacking out. The cause was said to be sitting on a plastic table which collapsed. A crewman of the rival yacht, Yamaha, suffered similarly.
