Paterson calls time on Scotland

Chris Paterson, the most decorated player in the history of the game in Scotland and a goal-kicker who, late in his career, out-performed the likes of Jonny Wilkinson and Daniel Carter, has retired from international rugby after winning 109 caps and accumulating a record 809 points.

"It was a massive goal to play at a fourth World Cup," the 34-year-old Edinburgh back said yesterday. "Since coming back, I've had a while to think about it. My biggest fear was devaluing what I'd achieved and devaluing the jersey. You have to stop at some point and this is the right time."

Paterson's 809 points includes 22 tries, 170 penalties, 90 conversions and three drop goals.

One of the Glasgow Warriors duo Rory Lamont and 19-year-old Stuart Hogg and Wasps' Hugo Southwell will be expected to replace the full-back in the upcoming Six Nations.
