Former New Zealand full-back Mils Muliaina has had a case of alleged sexual assault against him dropped after it was ruled that a lack of evidence meant there was no realistic prospect of a conviction.

Mr Muliaina, who won 100 caps for the All Blacks before retiring from international rugby in 2011, was alleged to have committed the offence in Cardiff city centre on 7 March. Cardiff Crown Court heard that Mr Muliaina was alleged to have touched a women “on the bottom over her trousers” while on a busy nightclub dance floor.

The 35-year-old was arrested by police at Gloucester Rugby’s Kingsholm stadium in April following a European Challenge Cup match for his former club side Connacht, but it has now been confirmed that he will not face any action over the allegation.

During his international career, Mr Muliaina scored 33 tries in his 100 appearances and was part of the New Zealand side that won the Rugby World Cup in 2011, along with claiming the Tri-Nations crown on six occasions.

Mr Muliaina left Connacht at the end of last season, and has since agreed a deal to play for Italian side Zebre, although he is yet to make his debut for the club.
