England were knocked out of the Hong Kong Sevens at the quarter-final stage by defending champions Samoa yesterday, leaving New Zealand to take the trophy with a win over South Africa.
England's attempt to take a fifth Hong Kong title in seven years was ended by a 17-12 loss to Samoa in the second tight encounter between the sides in two days. England won all three pool matches – including a defeat of Samoa – before falling to the islanders.
New Zealand claimed their first Hong Kong title since 2001 with a 26-12 defeat of the Springboks.
