Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Newcastle's hopes of a rare double over Bath disappeared as the visitors scored two second-half tries to come back from 10-5 down and win 17-13 at Kingston Park yesterday.

The game ended in controversy with the referee blowing for time with one minute and eight seconds still left on the scoreboard clock and Newcastle banging away at the Bath line before Bath turned it over and booted the ball dead.

Bath went ahead in the 11th minute when Alex Tait unwisely went for the interception and missed Michel Claassens' pass to Matt Banahan, who had an easy run into the corner. Newcastle's reply was almost immediate, though, with Jimmy Gopperth stepping through and the Falcons piled in to win the breakdown for Rob Vickerman to score in the corner.

But Bath kept their patience and former Falcon David Wilson burrowed his way over for Bath's third try in the 64th minute, Barkley converting to make it 17-10. Four minutes later Gopperth landed a penalty to give Newcastle hope at 17-13 but he missed another good chance three minutes later.

At Adams Park, David Walder scored 19 points as Wasps closed in on the top four with a 24-19 victory over Gloucester. The former England fly-half scored a try, which he converted, and four penalties. Gloucester came from 13-0 down to 16-16 only to be sunk by a late try from David Lemi.

In the Magners League there were defeats for Cardiff Blues, who lost 29-20 at home to Leinster, and Ospreys, who lost 33-17 on the road in Edinburgh.
