Gloucester beat Exeter 24-14 at Sandy Park yesterday. The win lifted the Cherry and Whites – who had not won away since February and who last week lost at home for the first time in two years, to Saracens – past the Chiefs and into fourth place in the Aviva Premiership. Exeter have lost four league matches in a row.
However, Gloucester's coach, Bryan Redpath, referring to the M5 crash, said: "It is a very humbling experience when you have to travel and see what happened 40 minutes up the road. We are in a privileged position playing sport and sometimes you get bogged down about records – winning away from home or losing home records. They are really irrelevant.
"Some people sitting out there have a lot more to worry about than us winning or losing."
Freddie Burns, Olly Morgan and Akapusi Qera scored tries for Gloucester; Burns kicked all three conversions and a penalty. Matt Jess and Hoani Tui scored tries for Exeter; Ignacio Mieres kicked one penalty and Gareth Steenson kicked two.
In the RaboDirect Pro12, Glasgow beat Aironi 18-6 with five penalties and a drop-goal from Duncan Weir to two penalties from Naas Olivier. Edinburgh beat Benetton Treviso 22-11 with a try from Ross Rennie and five penalties and a conversion by Harry Leonard. For Treviso, Ludwig Nitoglia scored a try and Kristopher Burton's kicked a penalty and drop-goal. Ulster beat Connacht 22-3 with tries from Craig Gilroy, Tom Court and Ian Humphreys, who kicked seven points. Miah Nikora kicked three for Connacht. The Ospreys and Scarlets drew 9-9, with no tries.
