Newport swiftly returned to form after losing to Cardiff with a 44-22 success over Pontypridd at Sardis Road, thanks largely to 29 points from their erstwhile Welsh fly-half Shane Howarth, who clocked up two tries, five conversions and three penalties. A haul of 17 points from his opposite number, Brett Davey, was not enough to spare Pontypridd's blushes.

In the Guinness Inter-Provincial Championship, Munster got the better of Connacht 23-13.
