The mood in Scotland appears distinctly anti-Anglo as the spectre of Newcastle Gosforth poaching players provokes fears that Scottish rugby could soon resemble Irish football, with stars only returning home for internationals.
Jim Telfer, Scotland's director of rugby, has urged club players to remain loyal and be more ambitious in the face of an influx of overseas players.
Among those who have risen to Telfer's challenge is Stuart Reid. The Boroughmuir No 8 has been knocking on the door of international recognition for five years and if he maintains the form he showed in a pulsating Edinburgh derby then his claims will surely become irresistible.
The match attracted a 5,000 crowd and produced what will surely be the try of the season by Jamie Weston. The promising Watsonians scrum-half rounded off a move which started behind his own line and featured major contributions by Gavin and Scott Hastings.
