From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

JOHN KIRWAN, the All Blacks wing, has announced his retirement from rugby union after a record 63-Test career.

Kirwan, 29, made the announcement on Saturday, although he will captain the New Zealand Barbarians against the Australian Barbarians on Friday night.

Kirwan was left out when the All Blacks played Australia in August.

He said he decided to retire as he watched Auckland's semi-final win against Otago.

'I wasn't missing it and thought that was a pretty good sign that this was the time to call it quits,' he said. 'Rugby was my life for 12 years, everything revolved round the sport. I would have been considering this even if I had played in the last few games. I can't give rugby the commitment I need to give it and think it is time to move on.'
