From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Troubled Wigan suffered another blow yesterday when Jason Robinson suffered damaged ligaments after turning an ankle in their 54-14 win in a friendly match against Castleford. "It's quite painful but we are hoping that it's not too serious," Eric Hughes, the Wigan coach, said.

During the game, a section of fans called for the Wigan directors to quit in the row over the proposed sale of Central Park to Tesco, and later they staged a demonstration outside the club pavilion. The club chairman, Jack Robinson, was away on a business trip.

Keighley justified their tag as First Division favourites when they kicked off the new season with a 22-10 victory at Workington. They led 12-0 at half-time and wrapped up victory with Keith Dixon's second try.

Huddersfield and Hull, expected to vie with Keighley for the one promotion place this season, both got off to resounding wins but Featherstone, despite four tries from Darren Hughes, suffered a surprise 36-22 home defeat by Hull KR, last year's Second Division champions.

Andy Cheetham scored two of Huddersfield's nine tries in a 46-16 success over Whitehaven while Chico Jackson touched down twice in Hull's 36-0 win against Swinton.
