MARTIN OFFIAH added to his many rugby league achievements yesterday to become the top try-scoring Englishman of all time.

The former Widnes, Wigan and Great Britain winger grabbed the 447th try of his career to help London Broncos to a 24-18 win over Huddersfield in their opening Super League match. He is third in the all-time list after the Australian Brian Bevan (796 tries), and the Welshman Billy Boston (571).

Karle Hammond, Tulsen Tollett and Greg Fleming scored the Broncos' other tries and Brett Warton kicked four goals while winger Andy Cheetham touched down twice for Huddersfield.

Super League new boys Wakefield Trinity suffered a 12-10 opening defeat by Castleford, who were reduced to 12 men following the dismissal of prop Dean Sampson. But Tigers stand-off Danny Orr landed two penalty goals in the last fou minutes to snatch a dramatic win.

A superb second half performance, highlighted by a hat-trick of tries from Sean Long, steered Ellery Hanley's St Helens to an impressive 30- 12 win at Salford.

Warrington followed up their Challenge Cup win over Halifax with a 16- 14 win over the Blue Sox at The Shay. Despite playing into the gale in the first half, the Wolves turned around 12-8 in front, thanks to tries from Steve McCurrie and Toa Koa-Love and never looked back.

Sheffield Eagles sensed a repeat of last season's shock win at Bradford Bulls when they collected a try courtesy of Dave Watson, but tries from James Lowes, Nathan McAvoy and Michael Withers and three goals by Henry Paul, brought an 18-6 final scoreline.
