Sheffield have arranged with Dewsbury to take their stand-off or centre, Chris Vasey, who is on the transfer list at pounds 20,000, on a months' loan with a view to a permanent signing.
'Chris can play in several positions and has had First Division experience with Leeds,' the Sheffield chairman, Gary Hetherington, said. Hetherington would like to add Vasey to his small first-team squad even if the news on Powell is good. Powell, the Great Britain centre, damaged his wrist against St Helens 10 days ago, in his first match back after a knee injury. An X-ray on Friday will determine whether the scaphoid bone is broken.
'He will either be able to play against Leeds on Sunday or he will be in plaster for another three months,' Hetherington said. Hetherington has also made unsuccessful approaches for two other versatile backs, Paul Topping at Leigh and Salford's Martin Birkett.
The deal that would take the Featherstone prop, Leo Casey, to Rochdale in exchange for Darren Abram was in doubt last night over Featherstone's demand for a monetary adjustment. The situation could be complicated by interest from other clubs in both players.
The League has moved to simplify the complicated procedure by which players can be cited for foul play after matches. In future, only a club or the game's board of directors will be able to cite a player and must do so by noon on the third working day following the match.
In the case of a complaint from a club, the board will decide whether it should go before the disciplinary committee. 'Some cases have been dragging on for six weeks, but this will ensure that the longest delay will be 11 days,' the League's spokesman, David Howes, said.
