Rowing: Boat Race crews sunk

Crews from Oxford and Cambridge Universities both sank in the first eight-man regatta race ever held on the Amazon River yesterday. Brazil, the only team to finish, claimed a surprise victory after more than 46 minutes racing.

The boats, followed by more than 100 private craft, were hit by powerful river swells with Oxford sinking after 25 minutes and Cambridge following eight minutes later.

"The boats were alongside of us kicking up a huge wash," the Cambridge president, Ethan Ayer, said. "We knew from the beginning that we were going to sink."
