Reading, with a 4 - 1 win against Guildford on Saturday, reached the semi-finals of the Association Cup and yesterday, a 3-1 win at home to Canterbury in the league, kept alive their hopes of the double. They remain in second place, two points behind Cannock, as they go into the last round of games on Sunday week.
Cannock, out of the cup, beat Bournville 7-0 yesterday with the discarded England striker Bobby Crutchley collecting three, taking his season's total in the league to 30, nine ahead of Ian Jennings. Third-placed Southgate, who were knocked out of the cup by Old Loughtonians on Saturday, returned to superb form in the league with a 5-1 win against Havant.
Guildford, the holders, eliminated from the cup by Reading, were beaten 3-1 by Old Loughtonians yesterday, a defeat which ended their league challenge. Trojans became the sixth club to be relegated from the First Division when they lost 2-1 to East Grinstead.
