Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

While not exactly burning, the home fires have not been wholly extinguished in the Investec Derby. Yesterday Brian Meehan decided that Crowded House, at one stage the ante-post favourite but disappointing on his reappearance in the Dante Stakes at York last month, should proceed to Epsom on Saturday after all.

"Crowded House scoped badly after the Dante, and we have monitored him closely since," the Manton trainer explained. "However, he worked on Monday and we were very pleased with him. More importantly, he seems to have taken it very well. He will breeze again on Thursday, but the plan is now to let him take his chance."

Meehan added the caveat that Crowded House retains an entry in the Prix du Jockey-Club, at Chantilly on Sunday, as a precaution against the ground deteriorating. But the forecast envisages light showers in the meantime only. The official going is good, good to firm in places.

Ten fillies were declared for the Investec Oaks tomorrow, including the leading fancies in Sariska, Rainbow View and Midday.
