From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

The Cheltenham Festival gets underway on Tuesday in one of the biggest horse racing events in the world, with 28 races spread over four days culminating in the famous Gold Cup.

The Festival is one of the grand events on the National Hunt calendar, with prize money second only to the Grand National meet next month at a total of more than £4.5m.

The opening day’s action kicks off at Prestbury Park in the early afternoon with the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle, with seven races scheduled for each day leading up to Gold Cup Friday.

Last year saw Al Boum Photo clinch Gold Cup glory for Paul Townend and trainer Willie Mullins, which incredibly came as his first win in the blue-riband event.

Mullins’ charger will challenge again this year and is fancied alongside the Nicky Henderson-trained Santini, but before then there is plenty of action to get through including Tuesday’s Champion Hurdle, Wednesday’s Queen Mother Champion Chase and a double-header on Thursday of the Ryanair Chase and Stayers’ Hurdle.

Here’s the full race card and results (all horses placed).
