It has taken Stonehatch, who contests the Dewhurst Stakes, a win in the Coventry Stakes and a close second in the Richmond to get within whinnying distance of Guineas favouritism. For Kalkabrino, similar status has come rather more easily - he makes his racecourse debut in the maiden, but the advance publicity from his trainer, Peter Chapple-Hyam, has been effusive. As a result, while Stonehatch is 20-1 for Newmarket next spring, Kalkabrino is just five points longer.
Since Kalkabrino is unlikely to be at his peak it may pay to side with the race-fit Tzu'Mu (2.00) today, but STONEHATCH (nap 3.40) has high class form rather than rumour to recommend him.
Taos (next best 2.35) has recovered his form only recently after persistent injuries but should now be up to winning the Darley Stakes, while Relatively Special (3.05) is relatively backable in the Rockfel.
