Racing: For the Notebook: A weekly list of horses to follow
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.DESERT ZONE: held up in the rear until ran on in the home straight to finish fourth of 16 in the one-mile handicap won by Mentalasanythin on the sand at Southwell last Tuesday. This four-year-old can get his head in front when more forceful tactics are adopted or longer distances are tried. (J L Harris)
DONT TELL THE WIFE: promising display at Folkestone last Tuesday when, on his first run for 10 weeks, made good headway to join the leaders on the home turn. Faded approaching the last flight of hurdles, eventually finishing only eighth to Happy Horse. But that 2m 6 1/2 f race was stretching his stamina too far. (Mrs D Haine)
EVERALDO: becomes a 10- year-old on New Year's Day but this high quality hurdler has been lightly raced. In a first public run for 14 months on Saturday, he carried top weight into fourth place behind Bellezza in a strongly-run Ascot amateur riders' hurdle. Was eased in the closing stages and clearly retains his ability. (N Henderson)
