Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

THE Eclipse Stakes at Sandown on Saturday lost some of its international flavour yesterday when Irish challenger Fatherland was ruled out of the Group One race.

With the going at the Esher course currently good to firm, Vincent O'Brien has earmarked an alternative race in France for his colt, who has shown his best form on soft ground. 'His next race will probably be the Prix Eugene Adam at Saint-Cloud on July 14,' O'Brien said yesterday.

Fatherland, a 16-1 chance in bookmakers' lists for Saturday's race, finished second to Barathea in the Irish 2,000 Guineas prior to trailing in ninth when failing to stay in the Derby.

Another to be confirmed an Eclipse absentee yesterday was User Friendly, who will instead run at Saint-Cloud on Sunday.

Although both Barathea (9-4 from 11-4 with William Hill) and Tenby (11-4 from 7-2) were well backed yesterday, the most significant support was for the French-trained Arcangues. Andre Fabre's five-year-old was eighth behind Kooyonga in last year's Eclipse, but put up an impressive performance to beat Misil in the Prix d'Ispahan last month. He now stands at 5-1 (from 10-1) with Hills.

ECLIPSE STAKES (Sandown, Saturday): Coral: 5-2 Barathea & Tenby, 7-2 Opera House, 8-1 Arcangues, 10-1 Environment Friend, 12-1 Great Palm, 14-1 others; Ladbrokes: 2-1 Barathea, 3-1 Tenby, 6-1 Arcangues & Opera House, 8-1 Environment Friend, 14-1 Great Palm, 16-1 Misil, 20-1 others; Tote: 5-2 Barathea, 7-2 Tenby, 11-2 Arcangues, 6-1 Opera House, 8-1 Environment Friend, 12-1 Great Palm, 16-1 others.
