Racing: Fabre encore
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.THE spectacular run of form of Andre Fabre's stable continued last night when Raintrap beat Alywow and Volochine to land the Grade One Rothmans International at Woodbine in Canada. The big disappointment of the race, however, was Peter Chapple-Hyam's White Muzzle, who started favourite at close to even money but finished last of the nine runners.
John Reid, taking over from the much maligned Japanese jockey Yutaka Take in White Muzzle's saddle, could offer no explanation for his poor run. The second British challenger, Reg Akehurst's Urgent Request, put up a much more impressive performance, setting a strong pace and at one point leading the field by 10 lengths. Though he faded to finish fifth, he was beaten in a three- way photograph for third place and was just a couple of lengths behind the winner.
The success was Fabre's third at Group One level in three days, and for good measure he saddled Sunshack to land the Group Two Prix du Conseil de Paris at Longchamp yesterday afternoon.
The Michael Stoute-trained Annus Mirabilis has been supplemented for next Saturday's Racing Post Trophy at Doncaster at a cost of pounds 15,000.
