Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

COONAWARA put in a fine round of jumping to stretch his unbeaten run to eight in the Badger Novice Chase at Sandown yesterday. The horse, named after a wine-growing area, of Australia beat Los Buccaneros and Couldn't Be Better by 20 lengths and two lengths.

That opposition was far weaker than Coonawara is bound to face at Cheltenham next month but Tim Forster, his trainer, rated the performance as the eight-year-old's best yet.

Forster has still to decide which race to aim for at the Festival. Sporting Index shortened Coonawara to 9-2 (from 5- 1) for the Arkle Chase behind 3-1 joint-favourites Atone and Current Express. But the trainer warned: 'He is no certainty to go for the Arkle. There is a strong possibility he will go for the Cathcart Chase instead. The going will be a big factor. He needs it soft and two miles five furlongs may suit him better.

'Today is the best he has jumped. He finds it hard to concentrate in front but he did that well today. This was his trickiest test and he passed it well. Not many win eight, even if they are round Newton Abbot,' Forster said.

The retirement of Celtic Shot, the former Champion Hurdler, looked likely yesterday after he was pulled up after the third last when returning to fences for the first time in three years at Sandown yesterday.
