Racing: Cochrane's choice points to Persiano
Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

KEMPTON
2.10: Tactful Remark goes for a Bank Holiday double after his course win at the Easter fixture. He could still be on a fair handicap mark and, while it could be harder today without Frankie Dettori and from a low draw position, his chance must be respected in a not too competitive affair. One who could upset the applecart is KING FOR A DAY, for whom Barry Hills has booked Tim Sprake. A draw position right next to the inside rail is a big help and the colt's sixth to Little Rock at the backend suggested he was capable of lifting a handicap in his second spell. Seventh in that Leicester maiden was Backcloth, who has already picked up a handicap this year.

2.40: The handicapper does not have the option of taking into account the form that Serenus and Shadiann have shown over jumps this season and like Heart, an easy winner at Bath last week, they look well treated on their return to the Flat. Serenus was moderate when he last ran on the Flat as a three-year-old, but has since won twice on consecutive Boxing Days. However, the value here looks to be the double-figure odds for the Richard Hannon-trained CLOAK OF DARKNESS, who performed well at this track last season.
3.15: Ray Cochrane has won on both Silk St John and Rock Falcon, but he rides PERSIANO. It looks a tall order for the colt with 9st 8lb on his first outing for almost a year, but it's unlikely he'll be outspeeded over this mile after his seven-furlong wins. With further improvement to come Persiano could still be a step ahead of the handicapper. Not too many horses win a mile handicap at Sandown by ten lengths, but it was achieved by Sunstreak last season. Chris Wall has booked Kieren Fallon which suggests he has the colt in top condition. Of interest at the bottom of the handicap is Gaily Mill, who might just prove today that her Newbury running behind Bomb Alaska was all wrong.

3.45: John Hills can do little wrong at the moment with Cubism being another winner for him yesterday after Docksider's success on Saturday. DOMINANT DANCER represents the stable against likely warm favourite Enemy Action and warrants the vote with the fast ground smack in her favour. Enemy Action had the superior juvenile form and was badly drawn in the Nell Gwyn.
