Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Q. Has any British sportsman apart from Vinnie Jones made a successful transition from playing field to silver screen?
A. Perhaps the most famous of the cricketers who had a distinguished career in the cinema was Sir Charles Aubrey Smith (1863-1948). A fast bowler known as "Round the Corner" Smith because of his run-up, he played for Cambridge University, Sussex and Transvaal. In his only Test he captained England in the first Test v South Africa on the 1888-89 tour of that country. In the 1930s he became a star in Hollywood (where he did much to establish cricket), appearing in such films as The Prisoner of Zenda and The Four Feathers.
Clive Porter, Maidstone
Q. Can any current footballer beat Dean Saunders's record of 10 clubs during his career?
A. The goalkeeper Bobby Mimms, who is eight months older than Saunders, began his career with Rotherham United in 1981-82, two seasons before Saunders made his league debut. He has subsequently played for Everton, Notts County (loan), Sunderland (loan), Blackburn Rovers (loan), Manchester City (loan), Tottenham Hotspur, Aberdeen (loan), Blackburn (again), Crystal Palace, Preston NE, Rotherham Utd (again) and now York City (his home- town club). This is a total of 11 different clubs, including the four he played for only on loan, but he also had two separate spells with two clubs.
Andrew Kirkham, Knaresborough
