The Indian Test all-rounder, Manoj Prabhakar, scored his first Championship century of the season at Swansea yesterday as Durham grafted their way to within 17 runs of Glamorgan. Prabhakar reached 101 before skying a catch in the penultimate over of the day to help Durham to 318 for 6.
He accumulated 18 boundaries in three and a half hours at the crease, but at 99 almost gave a catch to cover as he scrambled the important single.
His century was the fourth score over 50 by a Durham batsman - Mike Roseberry, the captain, scored 56, his best Championship innings of a poor season so far, during which he shared a century opening stand with Jonathan Longley (58), and Darren Blenkiron hit 53.
Nigel Briers batted all day to compile an unbeaten 161 and steer his Leicestershire side to an unexpected first-innings lead of 55 against Worcestershire at New Road. He was aided by Adrian Pierson, who contributed 30 to an unbroken last-wicket stand of 97, as Leicestershire reached 334 for 9.
The pair came together at 237, with Leicestershire still 42 behind but Worcestershire wilted and dropped four catches in the final session, including Briers on 123.
He reached the 30th century of his career in five hours off 246 balls, and then gradually upped the tempo with his third 50 coming off only 63 balls.
Kevan James took a championship-best 6 for 38 to restrict Derbyshire to a first-innings lead of 11 at Derby, only for Hampshire to slump to 17 for 3 before Robin Smith and Mark Nicholas rebuilt the innings.
Derbyshire failed to take full advantage of some promising positions on a day of fluctuating fortunes, with three batsmen reaching half-centuries and then getting out. Chris Adams, dropped before he had scored, hit 60 of his 64 in boundaries before playing on to James, who then struck a vital blow when Daryll Cullinan dragged a ball into his stumps.
When Colin Wells was out for 10, Derbyshire had slumped from 113 for 1 to 131 for 4, but Wayne Dessaur (67) and Kim Barnett (76) put the home side back on course.
Derbyshire were finally all out for 295 to leave the game evenly poised, but Phillip DeFreitas and Devon Malcolm tilted it back Derbyshire's way. Paul Terry was bowled as DeFreitas found some swing, and John Stephenson was caught at second slip. Malcolm then had Paul Whitaker lbw for a single, but Smith and Nicholas prevented further disasters to steer Hampshire to 69 for 3 at the close - a lead of 54.
