Winter sports

The prospects for an improvement in facilities for winter sports training in Britain brightened yesterday with a plan for a new pounds 160m specialist sports centre.

The site, a disused quarry in Shoreham, Sussex will be a joint venture led by the building company Alfred McAlpine and a new firm, Ski 2000. "We have the technology to supply fresh snow and ice every day, " said David Pritchard, the manager of the project. "In Tokyo they have the biggest resort in the world, so we are just intent on adapting their technology to fit to the south of England."

Britain has long needed better winter sports training facilities to improve a dismal record at the Winter Olympics.
