The popularity of The Championships at Wimbledon, because of the special atmosphere and prestige of the occasion, has meant that demand for seats has outstripped supply for many years. Thus, in 1974, to ensure an equitable distribution, the All England Club introduced a public ballot, whereby a large number of Centre Court and No 1 Court tickets are sold in advance.
The arrangements for 1996 have changed this year, with a new closing date for applications. Anyone wishing to enter should send a stamped addressed envelope to the Club for an application form and return it by 31 December 1995. Previously, the closing date was 31 January.
Wimbledon continues to serve the genuine supporters by selling tickets through the Lawn Tennis Association to affiliated clubs, schools, registered members and overseas associations. The small membership of the All England club and the 2,100 debenture holders have the right to seats, however, a substantial proportion is retained for the ballot.
