Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

SATURDAY / Cross-country

European championships

Alnwick

Great Britain finished fourth in the men's European championship last year and hope to go at least one better tomorrow in the grounds of Alnwick Castle, Northumberland. All eyes, though, will be on Paulo Guerra, the 25-year-old Portuguese who is looking to repeat his runaway victory of 1994. Guerra has established himself as the leading European in this discipline, having finished sixth in this year's World Championship at Durham in March. The women's race is particularly exciting, with Fernanda Ribeiro, the world 10,000 metres champion, pitted against Annemari Sandell, the Swedish world junior cross-country champion. The Portuguese runner led in the early stages but faded to sixth behind the winner, Catherina McKiernan, who is not defending. Julia Vacquero, the Spaniard who lost by one second last year, also runs.

How to get there: Alnwick Castle, Northumberland, is off A1. The women's race is at 1.15pm, followed by the men at 2pm.
