Two penalty strokes in the second half allowed Cambridge to sink the Royal Navy at Wilberforce Road yesterday, after the Navy had looked set to repeat last year's defeat of the University.

Cambridge were awarded a penalty stroke in the first half when Graham Mather, who had already cleared one shot off the line, stopped a certain goal with his head. Cambridge wasted the opportunity when Tom McCarthy's stroke hit the bar.

The Navy took the lead in the in the 7th minute following a penalty corner strike by Mather. They were coasting at the interval and looking in control of the game. But helped by some over-zealous umpiring, Cambridge came back and went on to a comfortable win.

Thirteen minutes into the half, Mike Meredith, the former Oxford Blue, brushed off numerous challenges before being awarded a somewhat dubious penalty stroke. McCarthy redeemed himself by scoring the equaliser. Four minutes later Cambridge were awarded their third stroke of the afternoon. McCarthy had departed to his studies, so it was left to Fedor Schulten to put Cambridge ahead.

With three minutes remaining, and the Navy reduced to 0 men by the temporary suspension of Jim Moseley for a foul, Cambridge put the game beyond doubt. Alan Thompson, the Navy's outstanding player, made three saves at a penalty corner but could he not prevent Ian Bateman scoring the final goal.
