North Korea's delegation to the Winter Olympics in South Korea will include a 140-member art troupe, the two sides agreed Monday, which may possibly include the all-female Moranbong Band.
The two Koreas met on Monday for the second time in a week to try to hammer out details for the North's participation in next month's Games, which the South sees as a way to calm tensions caused by Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile tests.
Hyon Song Wol, a member of Kim's personal girl band Moranbong, was at a Monday meeting between diplomats, suggesting that the group will be attending next month’s Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, according to CNN.
Pyongyang and Seoul are currently discussing whether to field a joint ice hockey team for the games, this news outlet reported. If this happens, it would be the first time the two Koreas compete under one flag.
In what was seen as a major step toward improving relations with South Korea, North Korea confirmed last week that it would send a delegation of athletes to the Olympics, as well as a cheering squad, an art troupe, a visitors' group, a taekwondo demonstration team and a press corps.
In a statement on Monday, negotiators said Pyongyang would also send the 140-member Samjiyeon Orchestra as part of its delegation. Moranbong was not mentioned in the press release.
Mr Kim formed Moranbong in 2012. The group frequently performs in military uniforms, singing songs about the leader's “sweet smile.”
“How can he be so kind,” says one song. “I have no choice but to be taken by him and his warm heart.”
