Five weightlifters have been barred from the Olympics after testing positive for drugs, it was revealed today.

None of the five weightlifters is British, said the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF).

They are Wafa Ammouri, from Morocco, Viktor Chislean, from Moldova, Zoltan Kecskes, from Hungary, Kumari NA Pratima, from India, and Sahbaz Sule, from Turkey. They had taken part in any competition at the Games.

Giselle Davies, spokeswoman for the IOC in Athens, said: "The IOC is aware of this. We welcome and praise the federation for their hard work. They do systematic testing of all their athletes."

The athletes were tested shortly before the Games began.
