Your support helps us to tell the story
From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference. There was disappointment for Team GB horse riders today when chances of an Olympic medal in showjumping slipped through their fingers.
Switzerland's Steve Guerdat won the individual Olympic showjumping gold medal.
British star Nick Skelton would have forced a jump-off with Guerdat had he gone clear but one fence down - the first his brilliant stallion Big Star has had in six rounds of jumping across team and individual competitions in London - cost him a medal.
Skelton told BBC 1: "It's one of those things. He hasn't touched a jump all week, and that was the worst time to hit one. I've been there before. It's the same thing again. What can you do? He is still a great horse.
"He's still fresh - he could go again. He was unlucky. It wasn't meant to be."
His two British gold medal-winning colleagues Scott Brash and Ben Maher also missed out on medals, with Ireland's Cian O'Connor and Dutch rider Gerco Schroder facing a jump-off for silver and bronze medals.
The jump-off for the remaining medals saw Gerco Shcroder win the silver and Ireland's Cian O'Connor win bronze.
