The Bristolian bowman qualified for the individual event in fourth place and drew 61st seed Emdadul Haque Milon of Bangladesh in the round of 64.
Roared on by a packed Lord's crowd he struck centre gold with his first arrow and eased to a 6-0 win in three dominant sets.
Milon was a modest opponent, shooting two fives and a six in his nine arrows, but Godfrey was in wonderful touch.
He dropped just one point in the first set and hit the inner ring in each of the next two, finishing with a final score of 84 from a possible 90.
His last shot needed only to hit the target to seal the win but he landed cleanly in the nine.
Godfrey would have been expecting to play an old foe in Italy's Marco Galiazzo in the last 32, but will instead face Juan Rene Serrano of Mexico.
Galiazzo beat Godfrey in the semi-finals of the 2004 Olympics and went on to win gold. He also claimed team gold yesterday but got off to a slow start and found himself dumped out 6-2 as Serrano clinched it with a closing nine.
